A Commitment to Care
Sometimes The
Little Things Aren’t
Just Little Things
Imagine for a moment that you couldn’t pick up what you need at the
pharmacy, enjoy your hobbies, read your favourite magazine, buy greeting
cards for your loved ones or meet up with your best friend for your weekly coffee
date.
These are just some of the simple pleasures that most of us tend to take for
granted.
Imagine if you or someone you love had to have a feeding tube surgically
inserted, but could not afford necessary nourishment and supplies. Or required
a new anti-seizure medication that was not approved for any funding.
For many in our CLH-supported community, these and many other essential,
life-sustaining and enriching activities are beyond their reach – because they
just can’t afford them.
You might be surprised to learn that CLH-supported adults who live in CLH
Supported Living Homes receive $1,222 dollars each month from the Ontario
Disability Support Program (ODSP), and that the government mandates that
all of this amount – save for $149 – must be used to pay for food and housing.
Which means that this so-called “pin money” must cover the monthly costs
of anything else that isn’t “food” or “housing”. Like feeding tube equipment
and supplies. Personal care and health essentials. Hobbies. Social activities.
Replacing a worn pair of shoes or a lost umbrella. A small birthday gift for a
special child. A haircut.
This fuels our long-term commitment to fostering the ongoing self-care and
social connections that are so vital for a full and happy life — for every person
we serve. Because sometimes the little things are what’s most important.
As the year draws to a close, please consider a generous gift to CLH
Foundation. It will be used wisely to make sure that everyone in our
CLH community can continue to thrive—with the care, comfort and
dignity that every human being deserves.
